Pelosi Makes Strange Elvis Presley Analogy When Asked About Greenland Joining US

DCNF(DCNF)—During a discussion with Politico on Wednesday, Democrat California Rep. Nancy Pelosi claimed there are more people in America who believe Elvis Presley is alive than there are natives of Greenland who want to join the U.S.

Interest in the Trump administration acquiring Greenland started in January after President Donald Trump suggested he was considering taking control of both the Panama Canal and Greenland. Pelosi made the comparison after Politico senior political columnist Jonathan Martin asked if additional U.S. military bases might open in Greenland.

“Well, it depends on the people of Greenland. It’s their territory. Now, I’ve been to Greenland. Before the vice president went, several years ago, I brought a delegation. [It] was the highest-ranking delegation ever to go to Greenland,” Pelosi said. “We went because of the climate crisis.”

Following Trump’s announcement, Democrats quickly pushed back on the idea of the U.S. acquiring Greenland from Denmark to make it an American territory for resource and national security purposes. While some claimed the proposal was false, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly on Jan. 30 that the bid is “not a joke.”

“We went there, and we went right to where the scientists were, practically underground. What they told us that they were measuring then, say this is about 2008, around that time, they told us that what they were measuring in terms of the melting of the Arctic, by the time it got to the peer review, it would already be obsolete that the melting was going so fast,” Pelosi said.

“So we went because of climate and a big delegation, bipartisan. It was really important,” Pelosi added. “If we had reached out to Greenland to talk about cooperating on security, on climate, on all of that, that would have been a very positive thing. I think that more people think that Elvis Presley is alive in the United States than Greenlanders who think they want to be part of the United States. It’s like 6%.”

A 2002 Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll said 8% of 900 respondents believed there’s a chance Elvis Presley is still alive. Trump’s push to free Greenland from Denmark has stirred interest among the territory’s political parties.

In March, Greenland went to the polls, with five out of six parties on the ballot favoring the territory’s independence from Denmark, according to the BBC.

As a result, Greenland’s pro-business opposition Demokraatit Party secured 29.9% of the vote, jumping up 9.1% from 2021, Reuters reported. While the Naleraq Party — which favors a rapid break from Denmark — came just behind at 24.5%, the Demokraatit still supports a slow approach to independence, according to Reuters.
