In the span of a few hours on Monday, San Diego witnessed a horrifying spasm of violence at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Three adult men, including a heroic security guard, lost their lives when two teenage suspects opened fire shortly before noon. The gunmen, ages 17 and 19, later died from apparent self-inflicted wounds blocks away. Yet what should prompt sober reflection on mental health failures, family breakdown, and the limits of policing has already triggered a familiar script: politicians and advocacy groups rushing to frame the atrocity as proof of rampant anti-Muslim hatred.

This was not a random eruption. Hours earlier, a concerned mother pieced together alarming signs and alerted authorities. She believed her son intended to harm himself. Police responded with available tools, including automated license plate readers. Yet the system, for all its technology, could not prevent the tragedy. The Islamic Center, which also houses a school serving young children through elementary grades, became the scene of bloodshed.

These responses, while predictable, reveal a telling asymmetry: when violence strikes a mosque, institutional voices swiftly attribute it to societal bigotry. Either way, the rush to exploit tragedy for cultural score-settling dishonors the dead and distracts from protecting the living.
